We were all quite shoocked to read the following
article about how Vince Cable wanted CO2 targets reduced. The group has been to visit
him on several occasions (before last year's general election) and he has always been very supportive!
Here is our letter to him. A decision is due on Monday 16th May in cabinet. So If you also wish to contact him - you know you want to! - please email him straight away on
cablev@paliament.uk.
or if you have a different MP you can look them up on
writetothem - which is a handy website for finding MEP, MP etc contact details.
Dear Dr Cable
Richmond and Twickenham Friends of the Earth are appalled to hear that
you have been lobbying for delaying CO2 cuts. May we remind you of your
strong support for the Big Ask campaign which led to the Climate Change
Act. The whole rationale of that Act was to prevent short-term political
decisions from derailing the urgent need to reduce the nation’s carbon
emissions. Despite the poor economic climate, the need to reduce carbon
emissions has not declined. Also it makes no economic sense to defer CO2
cuts. The cost of not tackling climate change is very high indeed. In
fact, we would argue that tackling climate change is many orders of
magnitude more important than tackling the budget deficit.
We therefore cannot understand why you are choosing to put short-term
financial decisions before tackling climate change. The former may be a
problem but the latter is quite literally a matter of life and death,
particularly for the poorer countries.
We strongly urge you to consider reversing your position and to support
the carbon reduction targets proposed by the Committee for Climate Change.
