Food has
many impacts for our health, biodiversity and climate change - not to mention
our local culture, social and family life, as well as our community.
Richmond and Twickenham Friends of the Earth have campaigned on food issues for many years. Most of our campaigning activities have involved taking targeted action locally
to make a difference not only at a local level but nationally too.
For example, we have:
- Asked local supermarket customers to voice their concerns regarding supermarket food directly to their local supermarket
(e.g., concerns over genetically modified food, pesticides in food and lack of fair trade food);
- Lobbied local councillors and MPs on these issues;
- Campaigned for policies which promote healthier more sustainable
food, for example, we encouraged Richmond Council to review and tighten
its policy in relation to GM ingredients in Council supplied meals,
such as school dinners.
- Encouraged people to shop at farmers markets
- Supported Friends of the Earth's Marine Information Network consisting
of campaigners who are especially concerned about Marine issues and are
campaigning to reform the EU Common Fisheries Policy. For more information
