RTFoE supports the Fish Fight campaign and Marinet Richmond
Park MP Zac Goldsmith launched an Early Day Motion backing Hugh Fearnley
Whittingstall’s Fish Fight Campaign in December 2010. At a debate in May 2011 the House of Commons voted in favour of the motion!
The wording was as follows: FISH FIGHT
CAMPAIGN EDM 1123 Goldsmith, Zac That this House welcomes the resolution of the `Fish Fight' campaign to eliminate the environmentally and economically damaging practice of discarding fish before landing; is concerned that up to half of all fish trawled in the North Sea are thrown back either dead or dying; further welcomes the campaign's support for the sustainable use of discard species by retailers, suppliers and restaurants to stimulate the creation of new markets for lesser known species; and calls on the Government to demand strong reform of the European Union Common Fisheries Policy to institute a regionalised, ecosystems-based management framework which incentivises the use of selective gear, uses real-time management, including temporary closures, and establishes ecosystem catch quotas rather than single-species landing quotas. The Fish Fight website
is www.fishfight.net. Friends of the Earth has a Marine Information Network consisting of campaigners who are especially concerned about Marine issues and are campaigning to reform the EU Common Fisheries Policy. For more information see www.marinet.org.uk We are also considering local campaign to encourage local shops not to stock certain fish and local people to eat less and more sustainable fish.
