Lack of action on climate change by London Borough of Richmond

We have become increasingly alarmed at the failure of Richmond Council to produce a Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan that will help our area to reduce its emissions in line with national targets.  The London Borough of Richmond has the second highest emissions per head of any London Borough, but, after a promising start, there has been very little progress on deciding what to do about this since mid-2009
If you are concerned about this we suggest that you talk to or write to your ward councillor or to Cllr. Virginia Morris who is the Cabinet Member for the Environment.  Their contact details can be found here Read more.

Fancy a Forest?
We have just launched a new blog on our website where members can write short opinion pieces.  Our first post came from John Repsch on the subject of the forest sell-off which, thankfully, now has been called off. So a 100% success rate to date!  If you’d like to write a short post (no more than 400 words) please email info@rtfoe.org.uk.

Excess Packaging

What are our local supermarkets doing to reduce packaging? The group has written to the big 3 local supermarkets to get a progress update, and give a gentle reminder that they need to do more.

To bee or not to bee?
Bees are dying in many countries worldwide.  Bees are vital to food production.  There is strong evidence that bees are being poisoned by the use ‘neonicotinoid’ pesticides.  Four European countries have banned these chemicals, and their bee populations are recovering.  We are thinking of campaigning for an EU wide ban of neonicotinoid pesticides.  Would you like to get involved? Ham Hydro Update.
Chas Warlow of Ham Hydro came to talk to us about the proposed hydroelectricity project at Teddington Weir in September.  The Ham Hydro weblog records that this involved “a few awkward questions”:  par for the course at a Friends of the Earth event of course, but in this case they mainly came from an angler worried about interference with fish breeding and not from renewable energy sceptics!

Fish Fight
